THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE AND
MUSCLE TESTING FOR PAIN
WHAT IS THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE?
The Bowen Technique originated from Australia by Tom Bowen who treated thousands of people, many who travelled hundreds of miles for treatment.
The Bowen Technique is unlike any other
forms of hands-on therapy. It is not a
massage and there is no manipulation or
force used. The treatment is gentle, subtle
and relaxing. It is a powerful, non-invasive
and drug free remedial therapy that uses a
light rolling type move across the skin,
fascia, muscle, tendon and other soft
connective tissue.
These moves stimulate nerve pathways encouraging a conversation to take place between different nervous systems of the body. The key feature of The Bowen Technique are the breaks. The therapist will leave the room after performing a few precise moves for between 2 and 5 minutes.
The breaks provide the nervous system
with the space and the opportunity to
potentially make a decision about how
to respond appropriately. Given the
right conditions our bodies have the
ability to adjust, adapt and heal
themselves.
The Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, realign, repair and rebalance. Many people try The Bowen Technique as a last resort after trying lots of other therapies that have had little or no benefit and are amazed with the results they get from Bowen.
The Bowen Treatment can be done through
light clothing or preferably on the skin. If a
person is unable to lie down then it can be
performed while sitting or standing. The
treatment is precise and targeted to the
individual and works on the principle of less
is more so not to overload the body’s
communication centre, which could result in
the body not responding.
Three to four treatments, five to ten days apart are often sufficient to achieve lasting results from even long-standing pain. Acute conditions can respond immediately, chronic conditions may take longer.
There has been lots of success for infertility
using The Bowen Technique. The Bowen
Technique helps align the pelvis and balance
hormones as well as relaxing the mind and
body and helping relieve the stress
associated with trying to conceive.
The Bowen Technique is safe throughout all
trimesters of pregnancy. It can help to keep
the pelvis aligned and address any muscular imbalances as well as help with the different symptoms that is experienced while the body goes through constant changes.
Athletes and professional sports people are
discovering that regular sessions of The
Bowen Technique enhances performance
and reduces the incidence of injury. When
soft tissue damage injury occurs then The
Bowen Technique can bring rapid relief and a
quick return to their sport.

The Bowen Technique is suitable for babies and children, including newborn babies. Bowen has proven to be a very gentle, yet effective treatment for treating a whole range of physical and emotional symptoms associated with babies and children. The treatments are shorter and the parent/guardian remains in the room throughout.

The lymphatic system has 3 main functions.
1) It maintains the balance of fluid between the blood and the tissues.
2) It forms part of the body’s immune system and helps defend against bacteria and other intruders.
3) It facilitates absorption of fats and fat soluble nutrients in the digestive system.
Symptoms which could be pointing to struggling lymphatics and toxin building up in your system may include:
Fatigue, swollen glands, puffiness in
eyes or face, swelling in the fingers,
bloating or holding on to water,
headaches, sinus infections, skin issues
like dry or itchy skin, soreness or
stiffness upon waking, unexplained
aches and pains, constipation,weight
gain and extra belly fat, breast swelling
or tenderness and lymphoedema.
This is why it’s important to make sure the lymphatic system is functioning at an optimum level.
Bowen for lymphatic drainage, like massage encourages drainage to the whole lymphatic system, but because it is gentler it is suitable for clients who are sensitive to touch.

After the in-depth questionnaire and a basic postural assessment muscle testing will then be carried out. This could potentially identify the root cause of the pain. The Bowen Technique will then be used to start the healing process.
